Manhattan, KS (Vocus/PRWEB) February 22, 2011
GTM Sportswear® and the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) are pleased to announce Courtney VanGroningen as the GTM Sportswear® Athlete of the Month for December 2010. VanGroningen will be recognized at a press conference at Sterling High School, Sterling, NE on February 22, 2010 at 8:15 am CST. She will receive an award, GTM® merchandise and be featured in various GTM Sportswear® marketing materials.
A two-sport standout, VanGroningen became one of Nebraska’s most feared outside hitters despite standing just 5-foot-4. VanGroningen set a state record with 51 kills in a match as a sophomore, and this year, she broke her own season state record with 642 kills as she led the Lady Jets to a 30-3 record and the Class D-2 state title match. Though Sterling lost that match in five sets, VanGroningen racked up 30 kills, six blocks, 32 digs and three aces. She also recorded 40 kills in the Lady Jets’ semifinal win and was named the captain of the D-2 All-Tournament Team. She also doubled up at the state track and field meet last spring, winning the Class D 100 and 300 hurdles crowns. VanGroningen signed a scholarship offer to play volleyball at Wayne State University next fall.
“The National High School Coaches Association is proud to recognize Courtney for her outstanding performances, not only on the field, but in the school and community as well,” said Bobby Ferraro, Jr., Executive Director of the National High School Coaches Association. “It’s truly an honor to recognize someone of this stature.”
"GTM Sportswear® is honored to be partnering with the NHSCA in recognizing outstanding student athletes such as Courtney. She has really shown her commitment and dedication to her sport and is a great example for the youth in our communities," said Nikki Miller, Vice President of Marketing for GTM Sportswear®. "We are very proud of Courtney and her outstanding achievements."
The NHSCA and GTM Sportswear® will honor one deserving high school athlete each month through April 2011. NHSCA Coaches can nominate commendable athletes through the NHSCA website. Each month six finalists will be selected by the NHSCA and presented via ballot to a group of high school sports writers, high school coaches, NHSCA and GTM® representatives to choose the winner. Out of the eight recipients of the monthly award, one athlete will be chosen as the GTM Sportswear® Athlete of the Year in May 2011.
