June 30, 2011 Medicare e-Prescribing Deadline Looms Over Physicians

Cost-effective solution provides compliance in one business day

e Interactive Universe, LLC (eIU), a complete ePrescribing solutions provider, has created a solution from its Web-based, standalone, full service e InteractiveRx™ application that will allow physicians to comply with the June 30 deadline that looms over physicians and requires them to send at least 10 prescriptions electronically or be subject to a one percent negative payment adjustment to their 2012 Medicare Part B Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) reimbursements.

This solution is MIPPA compliant and can be implemented in a matter of hours via an online, one-on-one training session where a company trainer guides a member of a physician’s office staff through the simple steps necessary to achieve the required number of electronically submitted prescriptions. After training is completed, deadline compliance can be achieved in less than one business day, depending on Medicare patient volume – guaranteed by the company. The solution must be implemented prior to June 15, 2011.

If physicians choose, they can continue to send 15 additional scripts electronically and comply with the Medicare 12/31/2011 deadline and achieve a one percent bonus on their 2011 Medicare Part B reimbursements. The e Interactive Universe standalone solution provides both a quick and easy solution to the Medicare deadlines but also provides all the long-term benefits of a complete e-Prescribing system. In addition, if the physician is in the process or is considering converting to an Electronic Health Records System (EHR), eIU will assist the practice to easily migrate all the data and capability to their new EHR whenever they are ready.

In January 2009, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) began offering eligible providers incentive payments for using an electronic prescribing (e-Prescribing) system to prescribe for Medicare patients. The CMS Electronic Prescribing Incentive Program was authorized by the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA), which became law on July 15, 2008.

For 2009 and 2010, e-Prescribing incentive amount was 2 percent of a provider's total estimated allowed charges for covered professional services during the reporting period (one calendar year). The incentive amount reduces to one percent in 2011 and 2012 and finally to 0.5 percent in 2013. Additional penalties begin in after 2012 if a provider is not successfully e-Prescribing.
