WHY: The overall objectives of the summit are to facilitate cooperation between leaders within the three largest rainforest regions -- Congo, Amazon and Mekong-Borneo -- on issues of sustainable forest management, conservation of biodiversity, regulation and stabilization of the planet’s climate, the fight against poverty and economic development. The specific objectives are:
•Learn about the current state of forest resources in the basins;
•Facilitate the signing of the agreement between the basins as a formal framework for consultation and discussions on forestry and climate issues;
•Adopt a joint statement on tropical forests, climate and sustainable development in the run-up to the United Nations climate change negotiations in Durban, South Africa (late 2011) and the June 2012 Rio+20 Earth Summit.
