“Mavericks High gives students, with a unique set of needs, the opportunity to get their High School diploma, said Frank Biden, Brother of the Vice President of the United States and President and Director of Mavericks Education.

Inspired by her volunteer work on President Obama’s Presidential Campaign, Areli Guerrero, 18, found that Mavericks High School was offering the same type of educational opportunities that President Obama was advocating – Smaller classes with students working at their own pace. With the help of Larry Harris who was in charge of the Florida City/Homestead Obama Campaign Office Areli enrolled in Mavericks as a Junior. With just 12 credits Areli knew right away that she liked Mavericks because of the size of the school and the personal attention given each student. It takes 24 credits to graduate from high school and with just 12 credits Areli then 17, knew that she and Mavericks High School were a perfect match.

“I work much better in a smaller environment and I really liked the 1 on 1 with the teachers that Mavericks has to offer, Said Areli. “The flexibility is great because when I had an unexpected pregnancy at the age of 17 everyone really helped me with my schedule. Everyone understood my situation and I continued to receive the personal attention I needed so that I could graduate with my class. The teachers and staff were great and they all taught me that even with my pregnancy nothing was going to stop me from getting my High School Diploma."

Because of the Mavericks flexible class schedule Areli was able to still attend school throughout her pregnancy. In August Areli gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Aaliyah, and in October Areli returned back to school and continued working to catch up on courses she needed to graduate.

Areli Guerrero will graduate June 13, 2011 from Mavericks High School. The graduation ceremony will take place at South Miami Dade High School, 28401 S.W. 167 Ave., Homestead, Fl., at 6PM.

“After all this hard work and determination I’m graduating from Mavericks not only with my class but as well as the Salutatorian”, said Areli. After graduation Areli will be attending either a vocational school or traditional college to earn a BA and become an RN. “After I had Aaliyah I knew I wanted to be around people and help them like others have done for me,” continued Areli.

According to Frank Biden, President and Director of Business Development for Mavericks in Education, “Mavericks High gives students, with a unique set of needs, the opportunity to get their High School diploma while providing real world career counseling”.
