There is no shortage of wicked problems. Or good ideas. What would a digital platform look like for MIT’s powerhouse of innovative and entrepreneurial minds to collectively problem-solve the challenges faced by under-served communities without clean water, health care or reliable energy? That was the starting point for Idea Couture, the strategic innovation and multi-disciplinary design team that built and continues to power the MIT Global Challenge.
Recently honored with a prestigious IDSA 2011 International Design Excellence Award (Silver), in the category of Best Interactive Product Experience, the MIT Global Challenge is a digital co-creation platform that inspires, enables and supports the global MIT community to apply innovation as public service and drive solutions to the greatest global challenges.
Initiated to celebrate MIT’s 150th anniversary, the Global Challenge connects MIT students with the worldwide MIT community through collaborative teams, sponsored challenges, mentoring opportunities and community recognition. Through student led innovation and entrepreneurship as public service, the online competition engages MIT students, staff, alumni, corporate and NGO partners, as well as the design community at large, to collectively fuel massive global environmental, cultural, societal and economic change.
The online platform facilitates innovation through idea co-creation, by leveraging competitive game dynamics and matching complementary and multi-disciplinary skills with team needs. The MIT Global Challenge engages core audiences and the general pubic through knowledge and advocacy, as well as “following and voting” dynamics.
In 2011,The MIT Challenge will award up to $150,000 ($25,000 per team) for the most innovative service projects with the best potential for impact.
