Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) October 03, 2012
The law firm of Baron and Budd announced that James Grumley, a mesothelioma patient, and his family have reached a settlement with former asbestos manufacturer Garlock Sealing Technologies for an unspecified amount proceeding a jury verdict of $12 million in damages. Grumley was diagnosed with mesothelioma – a fatal type of cancer associated with asbestos exposure – after working as a boiler mechanic at a Johnsonburg paper mill for several decades. (James C. Grumley v. Garlock Sealing Technologies, LLC, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, #002823)
"Jim Grumley's cancer was entirely preventable,” said Baron and Budd attorney John Langdoc. “Asbestos was just too profitable for Garlock. The worst thing about it is that instead of promptly eliminating asbestos from their gaskets and packing once they knew what asbestos could do, Garlock chose to spend decades devising ways to cover up the cancers its asbestos products cause."
Langdoc and others represented the family at trial.
After Grumley was diagnosed in 2006 with malignant pleural mesothelioma, the irremediable damage from years of exposure to the paper mill's boilers, which were covered in asbestos cement, asbestos gaskets and asbestos rope packing used on turbines and steam pipes became jarringly evident according to court documents.
