Legacy applications and services are tough to move to virtualized environments. Enterprises struggle with a physical to virtual (P2V) migration given the unique application by application analysis that is required to move the environment.

In this multi part series, the approach presents a cookbook approach to the steps and tools that are required to successfully migrate application from a traditional physical data center environment to a virtual one, based on a migration that was conducted for a national telecommunications service provider. The piece highlights some of the pitfalls along the way and how to overcome them.

In addition to the technical details, questionnaires interviews with key stakeholders were conducted to determine if there were areas for improvement. In upcoming parta of this series, the article will delve more into application dependency mapping and gathering performance metrics.
