Professional College Counselor Offers Advice to Veterans Seeking to Attend College

Sara Zessar of Montgomery Educational Consulting offers information and resources for veterans interested in going to college.

The college search process is different for people who go to college later in life . . . This is especially true for veterans.

In honor of Veterans Day and in recognition of our servicemen and women, Sara Zessar, a Senior Associate with Montgomery Educational Consulting, compiled a list of college and scholarship websites for veterans.

Ms. Zessar provided links to information about the GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program, which offers additional funding beyond what is covered in the GI Bill. She also provided websites for veterans’ scholarships, as well as sites that list the most veteran-friendly colleges. According to the organizations that produce these lists, veteran-friendly colleges have special programs and services for veterans.

“The college search process is different for people who go to college later in life, rather than right after high school,” Ms Zessar said. “This is especially true for veterans, who have unique considerations and face challenges that most high school students do not.”

For example, individuals who are still in the military may have difficulty completing a college degree due to frequent transfers. As Ms. Zessar described in a recent blog post, people in this situation should consider attending one of the 1900 colleges and universities that are part of the SOC, or Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges. The schools in this association have agreements to accept each other’s transfer credits, and many offer online programs.

No matter what your age or background, the college search and application process can be overwhelming and hard to navigate. By providing resources specifically for veterans, Montgomery Educational Consulting would like to say “thank you” for everything they’ve done in service to our country.
