Norfolk Redevelopment & Housing Authority is proud to have been honored with a Bronze Spotlight Award from the League of American Communications Professionals, LLC for the Marketing and Communications Department's work on the online Photo Archive, which provides an accessible and searchable gallery of thousands of photos depicting over 150 years of Norfolk history and evolution.

Norfolk Redevelopment & Housing Authority (NRHA) has been recognized by the League of American Communications Professionals, LLC (LACP) with a Bronze Spotlight Award for the NRHA Photo Archive, completed in 2011.

The LACP stated “Overall, we find this work to be outstanding, earning a total score of 96 out of a maximum 100 points. With this strong performance, the NRHA Photo Archive has been recognized with a Bronze Award within its competition class.”

The digital Photo Archive was created as a way to make historical photos available to the public and a centralized resource that captures the evolution of Norfolk from 1868 to the present. NRHA’s Communications and Marketing Department began the project in 2009 with a vision to transform an estimated 23,000 images in the form of photo negatives, slides and prints into an accessible and searchable online format. The archive features 76 galleries and a rich full-size, full-screen version of each image, including an augmented reality section, in which a past-era photo is inserted in the center of a present-day photo of the same area, making the transformation of time all the more apparent and breathtaking to the viewer.

LACP is an organization dedicated to supporting, recognizing and advancing excellence in the practice of professional communications. “The 2012 Spotlight Awards drew a nearly unprecedented number of submissions representing a broad range of industries and organizational sizes,” said Tyson Heyn, Principal of LACP. “Nearly 1,500 entries were submitted, representing a dozen countries and 300 entities, so competition was exceptionally tough. Winners demonstrated an outstanding focus on shareholders, their interests, and their need to understand the strategic and tactical decisions their companies are making.”

“We are flattered to be recognized with a 2012 Spotlight Award in the annual Global Communications Competition sponsored by LACP,” said NRHA Chief Executive Officer Shurl Montgomery. Other winning entries included adidas Group, Audi AG, Cisco Systems, Kennedy Space Center and UPS, among others.
