The Wall Street Journal recently released data about the number of knee replacements, adding substantially to the country's Medicare system.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the number of knee replacements (including the Zimmer Nexgen Total Knee Replacement) paid by Medicare has more than doubled over the past 20 years according to a recent study. These knee procedures have emerged as a large additional cost to America’s Medicare system. In 2010 alone almost a quarter million Americans age 65 and older had some sort of knee replacement surgery. This was an increase from 93,230 in 1991. At about $15,000 each these surgeries can total $9 billion.

More knee replacements were done in 2009 (676,000) than coronary artery bypass surgeries or hysterectomies.
