The brand new £2.7 million Higher Education Centre and Quad IT Zone at Barnfield College was officially opened by High Sheriff of Bedfordshire Jack Sapsworth MBE on Friday.

The dignitary cut the ribbon on the state-of-the-art centre, which offers first-class teaching facilities and innovative, cutting-edge technology. It boasts nine new seminar teaching rooms, as well as a lecture theatre that can accommodate up to 100 people.

In a speech to assembled guests, the High Sheriff said: “With this new Higher Education Centre we have, once again, a building of cutting edge design – functional fit-for-purpose and eco-friendly. With first-class facilities, first-class teaching and first-class leadership today’s and tomorrow’s students here will have no excuse not to excel.”

The High Sheriff also mentioned his joy at Barnfield Chief Executive Sir Peter Birkett’s recent honour from Her Majesty the Queen.

He said: “Government looks to Sir Peter for guidance and ideas in education matters. I was thrilled when I learned that Peter’s services to education had been rewarded with a knighthood in the recent Jubilee Honours. The award is well merited. It honours not only Sir Peter himself, but also the Barnfield Federation and this town of Luton.”

From the Higher Education Centre, Barnfield College offers an exciting and extensive range of university level, professionally recognised qualifications for those looking to progress further in education in order to kick start their career.

Barnfield CEO Pete Birkett said: “The Higher Education Centre is part of Barnfield’s continued commitment to creating the best facilities for all of our students.

“I would like to offer my sincerest gratitude to the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire Jack Sapsworth MBE, who took the time to visit us and officially open this excellent facility. I am grateful also to the many dignitaries and guests that joined us to celebrate yet another milestone for Barnfield.”

Barnfield College celebrated its best ever results this summer and at 89% is ranked within the top 5% of best performing colleges nationally.
