Having printed over 600,000 copies using recycled paper versus new, virgin-wood newsprint in 2011, the positive impact to our environment is abundantly clear.

Sumner Communications, leading publisher of general merchandise trade magazines, directories and websites, has received a GreenCircle Award from the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection for its efforts to achieve a sustainable earth. "The Merchandiser Group magazines are printed on 100 percent recycled newsprint," explains Scott Sumner, CEO of Sumner Communications. "Having printed over 600,000 copies using recycled paper versus new, virgin-wood newsprint in 2011, the positive impact to our environment is abundantly clear.”

To date, more than 1,000 GreenCircle Awards have been granted to businesses, institutions, schools, individuals and civic organizations for their involvement in more than 1,400 projects. "The program was established in 1998 to recognize those that are doing good things environmentally," shares Robert J. Hannon, coordinator of the GreenCircle Program. "We're also finding that businesses can be environmentally friendly and improve their profitability as a bonus." For example, one GreenCircle Award winner in recent years installed equipment to recycle water, and reduced its quarterly water consumption from 7 million gallons to 700,000 gallons, Hannon recalls. Other companies have made investments in reducing electrical costs and have seen a return on investment in as little as nine to 18 months. "People are changing formulas to get rid of hazardous components of their operations and doing more recycling," he points out. "Other activities, like cleaning up a section of a river or a road that leads to their plant, may have no impact financially but people do these kinds of things because it makes them feel good."

Nineteen award winners were recognized for their green activities by Daniel Esty, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, at a ceremony held in Hartford, CT, on November 26th. Esty gave a brief presentation, summarizing the awards for each entity, and recipients received GreenCircle certificates.

"As a publisher celebrating 25 years serving the wholesale merchandise industry with both print and digital publications, Sumner Communications is committed to employing practices that protect our environment," Sumner stresses. "Keeping Connecticut clean and green is everyone's responsibility."

Anyone interested in learning what they can do to protect and improve the environment can visit the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's website, Hannon adds. "Previous GreenCircle Award recipients are listed on our website and people can contact them to find out what has worked and what hasn't. They may be able to adapt one of the activities to their own organization."
