Residents of New York City and coastal New Jersey continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy. Morris Gad has commented on Diamonds International’s commitment to aiding recovery efforts.

A Reuters article has detailed the ongoing attempts of citizens to recover from Hurricane Sandy, which hit New York City and eastern New Jersey earlier this month. A native New Yorker and CEO of Diamonds International, Morris Gad, has pledged a portion of his company’s sales toward relief efforts.

Dubbed a “super storm” by the popular press, the hurricane left many residents without electricity for weeks on end. Nearly one million New Yorkers lost power during and after the storm, according to the news report. Local utility company Consolidated Edison was noted in the article as stating that the storm as the worst natural disaster it has ever had to deal with.

As the cold weather of late fall set in across the Northeast, many citizens suffered from frigid temperatures and no way to heat their homes. The article noted one family turned to burning wood on their front lawn to keep warm.

In a statement to the press, Morris Gad of Diamonds International detailed his company’s response to the relief efforts: “Being born and raised in NY, I am able to see this catastrophe first hand. I witnessed how awful our community and neighboring communities got hit by this storm. I believe it is in every New Yorker's best interest to do his or her part in helping out ones whose homes are devastated and are still without power, water or gas. My company, Diamonds International, and I will do our part by donating 10 percent of every sale of our Shira collection jewelry line to the Red Cross hurricane Sandy relief fund for the next month.”

According to the article, the storm also caused one of the most significant disruptions to the nation’s fuel chain since the 1970s. Citizens in New Jersey have been subject to gasoline rations, and fights have broken out among a number of drivers whose patience worn thin after waiting in long lines.

The article noted federal relief efforts have garnered wide-spread praise though many local efforts fell hopelessly short. Hurricane Sandy also devastated portions of the Caribbean prior to making landfall on the east coast.
