New Report from RootMetrics Shows Verizon Wins Data Category, but AT&T’s Data Speeds More than Tripled since January 2012

BELLEVUE, Wash. (November 27, 2012) – RootMetrics™ announced today the latest Miami RootScore™ Report and corresponding RootScore Awards. Complementing consumer-generated results from the RootMetrics CoverageMap app, the RootMetrics scout team professionally tests how mobile carriers perform in cities across the country. The Miami report analyzed results from 45,797 data, call, and text tests on the AT&T, MetroPCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks using smartphone technology RootMetrics designed to replicate real-world mobile usage.

This is the third report from RootMetrics on the Miami area. The company scouted the city in January 2012 and April 2011.

Observations since Previous Testing in Miami
Although AT&T’s LTE network upgrade provided the most compelling change since January, Verizon won both the combined and data performance categories for the third consecutive time.

AT&T’s average download speed was over three times faster, increasing from 3.2 Mbps to 10.3 Mbps. Its average upload speed was over six times faster, increasing from 0.9 Mbps to 5.8 Mbps.

Verizon’s average download speed also increased since the previous visit in January, moving from 9.0 Mbps to 11.6 Mbps. Its average upload speed increased from 4.6 Mbps to 7.2 Mbps.

MetroPCS, Sprint and T-Mobile all recorded average data speeds that were similar to those found in the previous round of testing.

Which Carrier Ranks First in Miami?
RootMetrics sorted the test results to show which carrier provided the fastest and most reliable data network, which carrier had the fewest blocked and dropped calls, and which carrier offered the fastest text service.

Data Performance: The RootMetrics data performance tests analyzed how fast each carrier’s network was able to download and upload files and how often a customer could successfully connect to a data network. With the fastest data speeds and strong network reliability rates, Verizon won the data category.

  • Verizon’s LTE network delivered the fastest average download speed at 11.6 Mbps, as well as the fastest average upload speed at 7.2 Mbps.
  • AT&T’s LTE network delivered the 2nd fastest average download and upload speeds in Miami at 10.3 Mbps and 5.8 Mbps, respectively.
  • T-Mobile delivered the 3rd fastest average download speed at 8.3 Mbps.
  • MetroPCS delivered the slowest average download speed at 2.2 Mbps.

Miami High Speed Data Comparison and Potential Slowdowns: The standard for what constitutes “4G” speed is debatable, but looking at the consistency with which a carrier offers speeds greater than 5 Mbps gives a good indication of a fast mobile experience. In contrast, data speeds below 1.5 Mbps often result in poor experiences when downloading or uploading files. In order to give consumers a more complete picture of how the carriers performed in Miami, RootMetrics compared how often carriers recorded speeds greater than 5 Mbps or less than 1.5 Mbps.

  • The following details the percentage of tests that each carrier recorded download speeds above 5 Mbps:

o AT&T 72.1%
o Verizon 68.9%
o T-Mobile 65.3%
o Sprint 30.0%
o MetroPCS 3.1%

  • AT&T and Verizon were the only carriers in the Miami area to reach upload speeds above 5 Mbps during testing, doing so 63.9% and 60.3% of the time, respectively.
  • Sprint recorded the greatest percentage of download and upload speeds below 1.5 Mbps, doing so in 56.5% and 79.9% of speed tests, respectively.
  • Data Reliability: AT&T and Verizon provided the most reliable networks in Miami, with average overall network success rates of 98.9% and 98.7%, respectively.
  • Call Performance: RootMetrics analyzed call performance by measuring both dropped calls and blocked calls (the inability to place an outgoing call). AT&T and Verizon delivered statistically equal 1st place call performances and shared a victory in the category.
  • Text Performance: RootMetrics compared how long it took each carrier to send and receive text messages. T-Mobile and AT&T delivered the strongest text performances in Miami and shared a victory in the category.
  • Overall: With the strongest overall performance in Miami, Verizon ranked 1st in the combined standings. The final results are:

1 – Verizon (89)
2— AT&T (84)
3 – T-Mobile (71)
4 – Sprint (60)
4 – MetroPCS (60)

To evaluate the mobile experience in the Miami area, RootMetrics conducted 45,797 call, data, and text tests during a seven-day period, covering all hours of the day and night, October 18-October 25. The tests, which mimic real-world mobile behavior, were conducted using the RootMetrics CoverageMap app running on Android-based, off-the-shelf consumer smartphones purchased from carrier stores. To ensure that testing aligns with the consumer experience, and to provide each carrier with the chance to rate as highly as possible, RootMetrics utilizes the most advanced smartphones available at the time of testing. Tests are conducted on activities that consumers perform most often: making phone calls, uploading and downloading files from the Internet, and sending and receiving texts.

Consumers who are interested to see how their network coverage performs compared to other carriers can download the free RootMetrics Cell Phone CoverageMap app for iPhone or Android devices.

Mobile performance varies depending on where people live, work, or otherwise spend time.
The results of this report, combined with the geographical coverage maps at and via the Cell Phone CoverageMap app, allow people to make better decisions about the right carrier for their individual needs.
