Michael J. Sweeney, PE, has joined HNTB Corporation as senior vice president and district leader in the New York City office. Sweeney brings more than 25 years of experience with transit, transportation and construction management programs in the Northeast and throughout the United States.

“Mike is one of our industry’s best and brightest,” said Rob Slimp, Northeast Division president. “He’s a proven leader who understands the value infrastructure provides to New York’s economic competitiveness and quality of life.”

In his new role at HNTB, Sweeney will be responsible for driving the successful operation of the firm’s offices in the region, including New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He’ll play a central role in strategic planning, quality control, risk management, recruitment and market diversification for HNTB, which has previously received recognition as Engineering News-Record’s New York “Design Firm of the Year” and Crain’s New York Business “Best Places to Work.”

“As someone who has lived and worked in the New York region for a long time, Mike can clearly see the kinds of emerging trends and opportunities that will make a measurable difference for our clients and the people who use their facilities every day,” Slimp said.

HNTB has been a leading infrastructure firm in the Northeast since opening its office in New York City in 1922. The firm is committed to not only participating in, but leading, the discussion about America’s infrastructure and continues to grow in size and scope of service to its transportation clients. For example, in 2010, HNTB opened two new area offices to better serve its clients – one in Albany, N.Y., and another in Camden, N.J. HNTB employs approximately 400 professionals in multiple offices across the region.

Its many signature infrastructure projects in the region include the Jamaica Avenue over the Van Wyck Expressway bridge, the first roll-in/roll-out highway bridge replacement in New York state; the Atlantic Avenue Viaduct Rehabilitation project; the new Squibb Park Bridge in Brooklyn, and the New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 6 to 9 Widening Program. HNTB serves as an engineering consultant to a majority of the region’s transportation agencies, with many of its strongest relationships spanning decades.

Before joining HNTB, Sweeney served as national transit leader for TranSystems. Prior to that, he served as a vice president at AECOM, responsible for its transit work in the eastern United States and Canada.

Sweeney has a Master of Science in construction engineering and management from Polytechnic Institute of New York University and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He is an active member of American Public Transportation Association and its high-speed rail committee, the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association and the New York Building Congress.

HNTB Corporation is an employee-owned infrastructure firm serving public and private owners and contractors. With nearly a century of service, HNTB understands the life cycle of infrastructure and solves clients’ most complex technical, financial and operational challenges.
