Kicking off with two sessions aimed at up-and-coming developers, Box UK’s Masterclass series began in style this November. Participants joined key members of the Box UK development team in a microcosm of a real-life Agile software development sprint; estimating, planning, coding and reflecting in order to deliver an agreed ‘client’ deliverable.
In 2 x 6-hour days web designers and developers worked together to create a number of features for an internal application used daily at Box UK; providing them with the opportunity contribute useful functionality and, importantly, see their work be made live at the end of it.
The Masterclass series was born through a recognition of the many numbers of people currently unemployed (including nearly 1m NEETs), specifically those that have digital talent but perhaps not quite the necessary experience nor commercial understanding of the workplace to yet step into the roles they desire.
Providing people with the opportunity to speak directly to developers with many years of commercial experience, attendees reaped the benefits of the knowledge and expertise of the team through the hands-on sessions. Box UK’s Principal Developers gave encouragement and guidance on joining the software development community, advice on building a portfolio, direction on acquiring valued capabilities and much more, to equip participants with the skills needed to succeed.
Career development and mentoring are a core part of Box UK's culture and the company already holds and contributes to a variety of events, from hack days for the region’s universities to technology meetups and more. The Masterclass series is now a central part of a commitment to nurture digital talent outside of the company itself and will be extended in coming months with further developer events plus additional sessions for a wide variety of digital roles including project managers, experience designers, business analysts and more.
