Shareholder Joe D. Whitley, chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Atlanta White Collar Practice, will co-chair Georgia Institute of Continuing Legal Education in Health Care Fraud event on Thursday, December 13, 2012.
Whitley, a former Acting Associate Attorney General (the third-ranking position in the Department of Justice) and former U.S. Attorney in Atlanta in the George H.W. Bush administration, will co-chair the event with Paul B. Murphy, a partner in King & Spalding’s Atlanta office. The one-day seminar will be held at the State Bar of Georgia headquarters located at 104 Marietta Street NW, Atlanta, Georgia.
Topics to be discussed include: the future of federal and state health care fraud initiatives, contractor audits, navigating the complexities of parallel proceedings, recent developments under the False Claims Act and the government’s increasing focus on the Quality of Care and Medical Necessity. Prior to joining the firm, Whitley had a wide-ranging career at the Department of Justice. He was appointed by Presidents Reagan and Bush, respectively, to serve as U.S. Attorney in the Middle and Northern Federal Districts of Georgia. He has served under five U.S. Attorneys General in a number of key operational and policy positions. Earlier in his career, he served as an Assistant Attorney in the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit in Columbus, Georgia. In 2003, Whitley was appointed by President George W. Bush as the first general counsel of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the highest ranking legal official in DHS. He held that position for two years and return to private practice. Today, Whitley works with Greenberg Traurig clients nationally and internationally on a variety of white collar and regulatory enforcement matters.
