The convergence of pharma and healthcare is happening rapidly and pharma companies need to realize its impact on patients and health outcomes.

Pharmica Consulting (http://www.pharmicaconsulting.com) has served the life sciences industry for many years, and has become the de facto expert in mobility, Health IT, and health data. As part of its continued committment to provide the latest information on industry trends to its clients, Pharmica attended the mHealth Summit on December 3-5th in Washington, D.C..

The word mHealth has grown in popularity over the last three years, as shown by the graph in Google Trends. Other statistics clearly indicate the growth of mHealth:
     • Physicians almost doubled their use of tablets since 2011, reaching 62% in 2012, with the iPad being the dominant platform. (Manhattan Research: “Taking the Pulse Study”)
•An estimated 81% of physicians use smartphones, up from 72% in 2010, according to survey of 2,041 physicians, by Manhattan Research in 2011.
•26% of US adults used mobile devices for health information and tools in 2011, up from 12% in 2010. (Manhattan Research)
•In 2011, mobile health applications generated about $718 million in revenue, about seven times more than the estimated $100 million generated in 2010. (Research2Guidance)

This growth was demonstrated at the mHealth Summit conference last week in Washington, D.C. where over 4,000 people discussed the latest trends in mHealth. Just 4 years ago this conference was attended by only 900 people.

“What an exciting conference and exciting time for patients, payors, providers, mobile companies, etc.,” said Matt Hendricks, a Principal with Pharmica Consulting. “The innovation in mHealth is happening so quickly.”

“The patients are the biggest winners in mHealth,” said Matt Kiernan, a Partner with Pharmica Consulting. “There was a lot of buzz around patient adherence, wellness, telemedicine, etc. The biggest shock to me was the lack of presence of pharmaceutical companies at the mHealth Summit. The convergence of pharma and healthcare is happening rapidly and pharma companies need to realize the future of mobility and its impact on patients and health outcomes. The blockbuster model is ending as we speak and outcomes and wellness are the future of pharma.”

“mHealth will be a big part of Pharmica’s next Health IT conference with a focus on pharma companies,” said Eric Lake, partner at Pharmica Consulting.
