Survey: Half of all businesses are planning for a more secure access method than username and password

A survey conducted by accells revealed that the combination of username and password is still a dominant method to protect business’ data and systems. But half of all businesses are planning to deploy a more secure access solution soon.

accells, the cloud-based Mobile Identity service, conducted a survey with more than 50 IT decision makers to get a better understanding of the remote access situation in businesses. Whether in business or private life, there is no escape from the aggravation, annoyance and confusion of ‘username and password’.

People have a large number of accounts that need passwords, and the temptation to re-use them is strong. With business and social media-related log-ons (by both employees and consumers) multiplying constantly via PC, mobile phone and tablet computers, the security vulnerabilities of all systems are exposed as never before.
accells Mobile Identity is a new cloud-based service that provides fast, easy and secure identification and access with your mobile phone – to any VPN, cloud, web or mobile service.

In the survey, internal systems behind a firewall represented the dominant mode (89%) of remote access – cloud-based systems were mentioned by just 38% of the respondents. The survey revealed that over 80% of companies do not have an adequate remote access solution today, but use username/password as the only remote access method.

IT-decision makers understand that they can address their security concerns with existing ‘token’-based systems, either with a hardware token, soft-token or an SMS One-Time-Password (OTP) solution to augment security with an additional authentication factor. But token systems are comparatively expensive, and add yet another level of complexity and annoyance to the process of identification and authentication. They are not the answer for most businesses. Even if the majority (60%) mention that hardware token provide sufficient security, 30% of them agreed that hardware tokens are not favored by employees.

When asked if the businesses plan to use a more secure method for remote access in the future, half of all businesses (51%) using solely username and password mention that they are planning to deploy a more secure solution.

After presenting the cloud-based accells Mobile Identity service as an authentication solution for secure remote and cloud access, 85% of IT decision makers were impressed by the accells service, in particular by its ease-of-use, the simple activation process for company and employees, its high security compared to hardware tokens and the fact that it does not create any additional hardware or transactional communication cost (as for SMS).
