Two-Hour Poster Session Will Show Educators How to Teach Students as Young as Fifth Grade How to Create Mobile and Desktop Apps and Spark their Passions for Programming

RunRev, creators of the cross-platform development environment LiveCode, today announced that teacher and RunRev customer John Patten will lead a poster session titled Learn to Develop Mobile and Desktop Tools Using LiveCode at the ISTE 2012 Conference in San Diego on June 27th. Patten has used LiveCode to teach students in 5th-8th grades the fundamentals of programming and has experienced great success in sparking student passions for technology and developing their own apps.

LiveCode is used by school districts and schools from K-12 through university levels, and has gained popularity among educators due to its English-like language, intuitive and easy-to-learn interface, and ability to deploy applications to any platform – mobile, web, desktop and server. With LiveCode’s visual development environment, students are able to see immediate results, giving them instant gratification that creates a desire to learn programming skills.

John Patten recently selected LiveCode for an after-school Coding Club where he teaches 5th-8th grade students basic programming skills. His two-hour ISTE session will expand on his recent work in the classroom while walking through the process of creating an app in LiveCode from beginning to end.

What:    Poster Session: Learn to Develop Mobile and Desktop Tools Using LiveCode. Attendees will see examples of LiveCode tools developed by the Sylvan Learning School District and commercial tools created using LiveCode. Patten will take educators through the process of creating a mobile app, demonstrate the fundamentals of developing in LiveCode and explain how to teach students programming concepts.

Who:     John Patten is Director of Technology and Information Systems at the Sylvan Union School District. He has presented at ISTE/NSBA conferences in the past and is active at education conferences around the country.

When:     The Poster Session takes place Wednesday, June 27, from 8:00–10:00 am.

Where:     The Poster Session will be held at the San Diego Convention Center, Halls DE Lobby, Table #35.
