Lee Wetherington Homes' Green Building Techniques Save Homeowners Money Over the Summer

Sarasota & Manatee County builder Lee Wetherington Homes uses innovative and new green building techniques and it pays off big for area homeowners- especially during the Summer months.

Summer in Florida means higher electric bills for most people, but with green building practices, Lee Wetherington homeowners save up to 20-percent on electricity. At Lee Wetherington Homes, the Green Experience is the company vow to preserve and protect the environment for the future.

Lee Wetherington homeowner Ron Messen lives in the La Cantera neighborhood in the Country Club at Lakewood Ranch, and says he has seen first hand how much money green building can save. Originally from upstate New York, Ron and his wife moved into their 4000 square foot home about a year and a half ago. “My electric bill with a pool and with air conditioning in my 1000 square foot garage is about $300/month,” said Messen. “I compared that to a friend who lives nearby in an older 1600 square foot home with no pool, and he is at $200 /month. I know it is because of green building and I could not be happier with the quality and energy efficiency of my Lee Wetherington home.”

Messen has icynene spray foam insulation in his home, dimmer light switches and a high efficiency air conditioning unit. Many of these examples can be seen in the Lee Wetherington Murano model in the Camargo neighborhood in Country Club East at Lakewood Ranch.

“We were the very first ones to go green,” said Lee Wetherington, founder and owner of Lee Wetherington Homes. “We did it mainly because it was the right thing to do naturally, but one of the other big reasons for me was that it was just such a great money saver for our homeowners and the equipment we bought was of such quality that it really enabled us to build better homes.”
Lee Wetherington Homes’ Sarezzo II model in Country Club East at Lakewood Ranch recently won the “Best Overall Green” award from the 2012 Parade of Homes and is certified Platinum by the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC).

Known as Sarasota's leader in environmentally aware building practices, Lee Wetherington Homes was the first builder to have employed FGBC Green Building Standards for every home contracted after March 1, 2005. In November 2007, LW Homes became the first (and only) home builder in Sarasota and Manatee Counties to become a 100% partner with ENERGY STAR® which means that 100% of our homes earn the ENERGY STAR® 100% of the time.

Lee Wetherington himself helped to develop countywide legislation for water wise practices throughout Sarasota. The benefits of building Green are enormous. When you choose a FGBC Green Certified, ENERGY STAR® qualified home, you reduce the burden on our environment, save up to 20% on energy bills, enhance your indoor air quality, and add value to your home.
