Hormone Therapy Study Confirms Pharmacist's Evidence Based Theories: Denise's Pharmacy Creative Compounds Offers Consultation for Hormone Replacement Therapy

"We now have approval from the North American Menopause Society for customized hormone therapies, for which I have been advocating. I have seen anecdotal evidence for years from patients who “felt better” on these tailor made hormone therapies. It is nice to see that there is some scientific evidence to back this up,” Denise Burnham RPh, compounding pharmacist, owner of Denise's Pharmacy Creative Compounds.

A recent interview in USA Today (http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/story/2012-07-08/hormone-therapy-menopause/56100846/1) with JoAnn Manson, president of the North American Menopause Society provides a follow up on conflicting reports on hormone therapy that confirms findings from Denise Burnham, RPh, owner of PCAB accredited Denise’s Pharmacy Creative Compounds. “The report and interview with Manson confirms that while hormone replacement therapy, particularly traditional prescription treatments—has risks, a tailored and compounded treatment (bio-identical hormone replacement therapy or BHRT) alleviates symptoms of hormone depletion while diminishing risks and side effects. My protocol for consultations for peri-menopausal, menopausal, and post-menopausal women includes analyzing lab tests, completing a symptom questionnaire, and taking a good medical history, which in combination offers patients optimal relief from symptoms such as hot flashes, memory problems, insomnia and irritability, and lowers risks for side effects. In other words, the practitioner and I work together to create a compounding prescription that is just enough hormone replacement to resolve symptoms but not more than necessary,” Burnham says.

With conflicting reports in the last ten years over the safety and efficacy of prescription hormone replacement therapy, many women stopped taking traditional prescriptions of hormone replacement therapy (estrogen and progesterone) in fear of developing cardiovascular problems or breast cancer. Clinicians became reticent to prescribe these controversial medications. Many practitioners admit they don’t know how to prescribe the right combination of hormone replacement therapy that is safe for their patients. Recent reports from JoAnn Manson, a lead investigator of additional research and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, confirms that while there are advantages for women to take hormone replacement therapy, a “one size fits all” approach is not appropriate (http://www.health.harvard.edu/books/Hot-Flashes-Hormones-and-Your-Health). “This recent published interview confirms what I have been teaching practitioners and patients for years. Tailored compounding products offer the highest hormone coverage with the minimum of risk. It is a win-win for patients to relieve symptoms, sleep better, improve overall mental clarity, and function more effectively without the fear of developing disease from treatments,” Burnham explains.
