Las Vegas is already considered a sensational place, but the ante has just been upped as A&E’s blockbuster series Storage Wars will be sending some of its biggest stars to appear on behalf of Charity Storage at the Self Storage Association’s Fall Conference & Trade Show at Caesar’s Palace on September 5. Auctioneer Dan Dotson and “The Collector” Barry Weiss are scheduled to appear at a number of venues at the SSA gathering to meet with conference attendees.

“We are thrilled to have Dan and Barry come to Las Vegas to spread the message about Storage Wars, self storage auctions and, in particular, those auctions hosted by Charity Storage,” said Lance Watkins, co-founder of Charity Storage along with Barry Hoeven, Chairman of Westport Properties/ US Storage Centers. “Dan and Barry have been huge supporters of our program to raise money for charities through auctions from the beginning. And I think it can be easily said that Storage Wars has had a profound influence on self storage auctions across the country.”

Dotson and Weiss are scheduled to appear at three different SSA Conference events on September 5. A special panel discussion about auctions is slated to take place at 10:15 a.m. in the Palace Ballroom at Caesar’s Palace and Watkins will be a panel member. Dotson and Weiss will be available to discuss the popularity and influence of Storage Wars. Then, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dotson and Weiss are scheduled to appear at the Charity Storage booth (Booth 525) at the SSA Trade Show to meet and greet conference attendees, have their pictures taken and sign autographs. Finally, at 6 p.m. a Welcome Reception will take place in the Palace Ballroom and the Storage Wars stars are expected to be on hand to meet more of the conference attendees.

Charity Storage was created when Watkins and Hoeven saw the popularity of self storage auctions grow and realized that the self storage industry could give back to society through special auctions whose proceeds go to local and national charities. The net proceeds from the sale of each unit at a Charity Storage auction are split three ways -- the Self Storage Association Foundation (which provides scholarships to students who are related to self storage professionals or work at self storage facilities) receives 10 percent, Kure It Cancer Research receives 30 percent, and the individual facility chooses a local or national charity to receive the remaining 60 percent.

“Charity Storage is in its first year of existence and to have people as influential as Dan Dotson and Barry Weiss come to Las Vegas to support our cause is very gratifying,” added Watkins, who also founded Storage Treasures to help promote self storage auctions across the country. “We hope that the people who meet and greet Dan and Barry will also consider making their facilities available for future Charity Storage auctions.”

Charity Storage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit recognized as tax exempt by the IRS. Federal Tax ID# 45-3253579. For more information, visit charitystorage.org or E-mail info(at)charitystorage(dot)org.
