South Dakota based Gigastrand International announced it will be taking on the challenge of developing its own operating system to be released June 2013 and distributed through the Linux4Everyone website.

The Alpha version is still a long way off from where we want to be with this system, but it proves that the direction we are taking is possible.

Gigastrand International (, has taken a giant leap toward making Linux possible for everyone with the announcement of the Linux-based Gigastrand Operating System.

The Gigastrand OS will strive to be the very best of what open source has to offer and include tools and applications designed to help users of other systems transition to Linux. To raise the required funding, Gigastrand has put the project on Kickstarter.

“We are very excited about this project,” Gigastrand founder Josh Tordsen explains. “It aims to be different from any other Linux distribution out there by actually integrating tools and technologies that the end-user would normally have to discover and install themselves.”

A proof-of-concept prototype has already been developed and a testing version will be released in early January – pending funding on Kickstarter. The Gigastrand OS will be designed to be simple to install and use with many tools and utilities pre-installed to make the operating system as simple as possible for those transitioning from other OSes.

“We want users to do as little work as possible when trying out a new system,” Tordsen says. “Rather than having to figure out how to install the software they need, we want to provide as much as we can for them right out of the installation. For anything else users want to install, we will make sure the process is well-documented and assistance is available. The system should be as self-supporting as we can make it.”

If the kickstarter funding is successful, the Gigastrand Operating System is planned for release in June 2013. Gigastrand will ship 2 versions: a low cost Open Version based on free software that will be distributed through Linux4Everyone (, and a Premium Version that will be available as a retail product and pre-installed on Gigastrand PCs and Laptops.

“The Alpha version is still a long way off from where we want to be with this system, but it proves that the direction we are taking is possible.”
