In theory, students enroll in test prep courses to raise their test scores. In reality, they take prep courses to improve their chances of admission to college. The real goal is to get admitted to a better college, get awarded more scholarships, and compensate for grades or a lack of extra-curricular activities.
Andover College Prep, based in Westport, Conn., is now linking their SAT and ACT prep courses to the real goal of test preparation. All juniors who enroll in Andover’s “Top 3 Guaranteed” program are guaranteed admission to a college in the top 3 percent of America’s roughly 3,000 colleges, according to U.S. News’s 2012 university list. “In this economy, parents want a guarantee that goes beyond just raising test scores,” says Nathan Allen, President of Andover. “We’ve been guaranteeing college admission in other programs for years, and we’ve been very successful. So we finally decided to make the guarantee at the broadest level.”
Andover’s SAT and ACT courses have recorded nation -high averages of 340 and 7 points, respectively. And Andover’s “Top 40” program, which guaranteed admission to a top 40 ranked college, has a 100% a success rate. But that program, which starts at $20,000, was not broadly marketed. “We decided that given our past success, we could certainly deliver a similar program on a larger scale,” said Allen.
The program includes detailed test preparation and personalized college admissions counseling. The guarantee is money-back. “We’ll refund 100 percent of the fee if the student isn’t admitted to a top 3 percent school by spring of the senior year,” Allen confirmed.
Enrollment is open to juniors in Fairfield County, Connecticut, but the enrollment deadline is next week. Greg Merle, director of college admissions, explained, “We need to start working with students now, if we want to make this happen. A little timely preparation goes a long way to achieving goals.”
The Top 3 Guaranteed program is open to all Fairfield County juniors. There are no special qualifications or applications. Best of all, the fee for the program is almost 90 percent less than the fee for the Top 40 program. Enrollment is limited and ends September 28, 2012.
