The wireless industry is struggling to address the backhaul capacity needed to support the hockey-stick growth in mobile data traffic

SOLiD is participating on the “Backhaul to Basics” panel during the 2012 Wireless Infrastructure Show which takes place October 1 – 4 in Orlando, FL. Due to the seemingly insatiable demand for bandwidth, wireless operators are continually evaluating and rapidly evolving their strategies for moving data traffic around on their networks, known as backhaul. As a result, it is expected that $800 billion will be spent on backhaul equipment between 2012 and 2016. The session will define backhaul technology options, explore the backhaul requirements for both macro cell and small cell networks, and identify which backhaul technology should be deployed and under what circumstances.

Wireless industry experts predict that mobile data traffic will increase 18-fold over the next four years. Not only must the macro network keep pace to support the market’s staggering appetite for bandwidth but so does the Radio Access Network (RAN). Small cells are one of the key methods being deployed to help address RAN spectral efficiency by delivering capacity and quality of service in high-density areas such as a city or stadium. However this approach creates the additional network challenge of transporting data between the small cell and the basedband. To distinguish between data transport at the macro and small cell network levels, the industry commonly refers to the process as backhaul and fronthaul, respectively.

“One of the biggest and most important challenges the wireless industry is struggling to address is delivering the backhaul capacity needed to support the hockey-stick growth in mobile data traffic,” said Seth Buechley, President of SOLiD. “While there won’t be a one-size-fits-all solution for backhaul, we believe that fiber – when available – will be the first choice of wireless operators due to its reliability, scalability and cost-efficiency. "

“We further expect to see the emergence of Remote Radio Head (RRH) networks in the U.S. market enabled by fiber fronthaul solutions such as SOLiD’s INFINITY ACCESS,” added Mr. Buechley. “This architecture, which SOLiD has enabled for a preeminent telecom provider in South Korea, delivers built-in scalability to achieve cell density and supports rapid deployment at a reduced cost.”

The "Backhaul to Basics" panel takes place on Tuesday, October 2 from 1:30pm to 3:00pm in the Blue Spring Room at the Peabody Orlando. The Wireless Infrastructure Show is the industry’s premier event focusing on mobile infrastructure for 4G and beyond. The three-day conference and trade show draws telecom and technology executives, policy-makers, financial analysts and national media for unparalleled education, business development and networking.
