Chicago health IT company expands its focus on training, certification

Chicago healthcare information technology (HIT) company EMRapproved has appointed Brian Johnson its senior director of online training and education. Johnson was promoted from his 2012 position as 4Med editor and copy chief to direct the rapid growth and expansion of the 4Med training and certification division. 4Med offers courses covering critical electronic medical record (EMR) and HIT functions from EMR Project Management to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.

Johnson’s promotion is part of an increased focus on education and training by the EMRapproved advisory board and corporate management team. The expanding 4Med certification and continuing education programs are designed to both retrain workers in an industry with a large number of vacancies and to educate HIT workers and other healthcare practitioners in the Meaningful Use of EMRs. Every certification course includes student access to a working EMR solution, certified by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, to incorporate hands-on learning.

Brian brings a wealth of career experience in education, online publishing and life sciences, having worked with World Book Encyclopedia’s online curriculum and publishing programs at a project-management level. He is also professionally certified in EMR/HIT and HIPAA Security, adding to his portfolio of industry knowledge.

“Brian understands the challenges inherent in educating workers in a constantly changing, highly technical field,” said Kevin Donnelly, the company’s CEO. “He’s adept at working with stakeholders in designing programs to achieve educational goals for those new to a given topic. His experience in working with content and distribution partners will be extremely valuable in helping us to meet increasing healthcare industry needs by leveraging our robust online learning platform.”

4Med seeks to fill an ever-widening gap in the nation’s collective skill set. As federal incentives for electronic health records are phased out and penalties loom, the number of openings for qualified HIT professionals far exceeds supply. A recent survey by Wanted Analytics showed that EHR training was the most sought-after skill in the healthcare market. In addition, a 2012 survey by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) found that two-thirds of member chief information officers (CIOs) who responded were experiencing HIT staffing shortages.

To meet this increasing demand, EMRapproved provides comprehensive education for individuals, groups and vendors. The training and education program combines self-paced online lessons, multimedia content, certification exams and hands-on practical experience with access to a real-world certified EMR solution.

“To build a truly successful program to help fill the HIT gap nationwide, we have engaged skilled industry professionals to develop content and continue to connect with key partners to open up channels for delivery of our practical offerings,” said Wendy Whitmore, managing partner and CIO of EMRapproved. “Brian was hired not only for his ability to manage this important company growth project but to engage this increasing network of content and delivery partners at a high level.”

About 1,000 students have been trained through the 4Med program thus far, a number the company hopes to triple in 2013 as courses and resellers are added weekly. Part of that growth strategy includes work with community colleges, medical schools, vocational programs and online training initiatives such as WIA (Workforce Investment Act).

As part of its expansion, EMRapproved will be exhibiting its educational programs in booth 607 at the 38th annual Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEHP) conference in San Francisco, Jan. 30 – Feb. 2. At the conference, the organization will be meeting with education leaders from professional societies, hospitals, integrated delivery networks and other providers, performing market research and seeking to form strategic partnerships in pursuit of expanding its offerings for doctors, nurses and other EMR end users.

Current 4Med certifications include:

  •     Certified EMR Office Professional (CEOP)
  •     Certified Healthcare Technology Professional (CHTP)
  •     Certified Healthcare Technology Sales Professional (CHTSP)
  •     Certified EMR Management Professional (CEMP)
  •     Certified Healthcare Technology Hiring Professional (CHTHP)
  •     Certified HIPAA Security Professional (CHSP)
  •     Certified HIPAA Workforce Professional (CHWP)

Courses are also available as part of complete career bundles for various fields, including medical IT support, office management and inside sales. 4Med Training courseware is approved for CEU and continuing education in association with EMRapproved and Corexcel. The program also offers government-approved veteran retraining through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) through its partnership with the CareerBoss, LLC.

Johnson, 36, of Chicago, previously held project and content management positions with World Book Inc., the Jackson Free Press and Time Warner Inc. He is a graduate of Iowa State University of Science and Technology.
