PRO Compression Responds to the Health Risks for Soldiers During Long Flights

After a Stars and Stripes article discussing the health risks posed to service members by the frequency of their long deployment flights, PRO Compression comments on the potential ability of compression garments to prevent blood clots during air travel.

On March 1, PRO Compression responds to a recent article from Stars and Stripes on the risk of developing blood clots during long flights, pointing to the use of compression garments as a viable solution.

“Service members face all kinds of risks deploying, but might not realize that the dangers can start on the flight itself: Sitting for hours can result in potentially deadly blood clots forming in the legs and traveling to the lungs or heart.”

The article reports that while doctors have known for years that long flights can lead to blood clots, the trend of blood clotting in soldiers was only recently discovered. Col. Bernard Geiser, an army surgeon, became aware of this when he was in Kuwait and would see a blood clot case once every ten days. Then he had three blood clot cases in a two-week period, two of which were potentially fatal. This was what made him take notice and start taking preventative action.

In addition to getting up and stretching during long flights, Geiser echoes the advice of many doctors, recommending that passengers consider wearing compression golf socks before, during and after air travel, since the tight-fitting garments don’t allow the blood to collect in your legs.

Smith added that he hopes all soldiers will start to wear compression socks during their flights. As they prepare to go home or begin a tour of duty, the last thing a soldier wants to face is a potentially fatal blood clot.

Eric Smith, CEO of PRO Compression, commented on the article, “While we developed our running and graduated compression socks to benefit athletes, compression garments offer various health and circulatory benefits, too, as research has shown. We have started recommending our socks to people looking to promote circulation during long flights. This is a great option to consider for all our service members – if the research is any indication, compression garments are probably something the Armed Forces should be providing.”

At PRO Compression we’ve created high-quality, graduated compressions socks tailor-made for the weekend runner and elite athlete. Unlike countless gimmicks that claim to improve your performance, with PRO Compression socks, the instant, positive improvement isn’t an empty promise – it’s purely scientific.
