PRO Compression Says the Benefits of Compression Socks Cannot Be Denied

After a recent article evaluating the research on the use of compression garments for improving athletic performance, PRO Compression issues a response affirming the benefits of compression socks for runners and endurance athletes.

On March 6, 2013, compression socks manufacturer, PRO Compression, responds to a recent article posted on assessing the benefits of compression socks for runners.

“For decades, medical-grade graduated compression socks have been used to combat deep vein thrombosis, or the formation of blood clots. By increasing the circulation and blood flow, research has found the socks to be effective for bed-ridden and inactive patients.”

However, the article claims that the effectiveness of compression garments for athletes is still under question. The article highlights one recent study which tested 21 male runners, wearing both compression socks and non-compression socks. Those wearing compression socks were able to go slightly longer before succumbing to exhaustion, reports the article. Small increases were also found in the runners' threshold for anaerobic exercises, particularly in cycling and jumping.

According to the article, sports physiology professor Elmarie Terblanche recently conducted the first real-world study examining the effects of compression socks on athletic performance, following athletes running the Two Oceans ultra-race in South Africa. Her study concluded that athletes who used compression socks “had significantly less muscle damage and were able to recover more quickly” than those racing with regular knee-high socks or those without either. Those wearing the compression socks ran 12 minutes faster, on average. “Considering that they ran one of the most difficult ultras in South Africa, this was significant,” says Terblanche. “While she acknowledges her study can’t be considered conclusive, because there’s always a chance for a placebo effect in the real world scenario, the recovery findings are in line with other research.”

“Compression products can help the athlete reach their optimum performance,” says Eric Smith, CEO of PRO Compression. “Research shows that the compression gives athletes a comfortable feeling and stimulates circulation , and can help speed recovery after a grueling event. In addition to these benefits, they show no wear and tear even after being used continuously for two months. We have received enough testimonials from athletes who use our graduated compression socks to have no doubt about their effectiveness.”
