Moran says PSI will remain at the industry’s forefront by educating pet owners on what to look for when selecting professional pet sitters and by providing its pet-sitting members with new educational tools and resources to stand out from the competition.

When Patti Moran decided to start her own small pet-sitting business after a corporate layoff in 1983, she never imagined that her decision to take a risk and follow her passion for pets would lead to an international association and give birth to an entirely new industry. Yet, just a few decades later, professional pet care is the fastest growing segment of the pet industry and March 3-9 marks the 19th annual observance of Professional Pet Sitters Week™ (PPSW™).

Introduced in 1995 by Pet Sitters International (PSI), the professional pet-sitting organization Moran founded, PPSW is an annual observance that honors professional pet-care providers, educates the pet-owning public about the advantages of professional in-home pet care and encourages pet-loving entrepreneurs to explore professional pet sitting as a viable career.

PSI’s more than 7,000 member businesses are encouraged to celebrate the week with pet-sitter networking events, special offers for clients and local media promotions. During PPSW, the association is also offering its members and prospective pet sitters a complimentary chapter excerpt from PSI’s Certification Program, the most comprehensive training program available in the pet-sitting industry.

“Our primary goal is to recognize the tireless efforts of professional pet sitters who work 24/7 to offer the best possible pet-care services,” said PSI President Patti Moran. “However, PPSW is also a time to acknowledge the industry’s growth and to anticipate service-related needs for these professionals and the clients they serve.”

The American Pet Products Association found that U.S. pet owners spent $4.4 billion on pet services like pet sitting last year—up nearly 10 percent from 2011.

Despite the pet-sitting industry’s growth, Moran notes the core mission remains the same.

“What professional pet sitters offer is a personalized, reliable service unmatched by other pet-care options,” explained Moran. “While there are more pet sitters than ever before, what remains at the heart of this industry is the special bond pet sitters develop with their clients’ pets and their ongoing commitment to caring for clients’ pets as if they were their own.”

PSI’s members agree to abide by PSI’s Recommended Quality Standards for Excellence in Pet Sitting and adhere to PSI’s Member Code of Conduct and Ethics.

Moran adds that professional pet sitters’ commitment to excellent pet care also includes maintaining pet-sitter insurance and bonding, offering proof of clean criminal history and staying up to date on the latest pet-care information through continuing education like PSI’s Certification Program.

“With the increase in pet ownership and the subsequent popularity of pet sitting has come a surge in Web sites offering local locator services,” Moran said. “We stress to pet owners that with more options comes a greater responsibility to carefully screen any potential pet sitter—not every person who advertises pet-sitting services is well-trained, professional and reliable.”

Moran says PSI will remain at the industry’s forefront by educating pet owners on what to look for when selecting professional pet sitters and by providing its pet-sitting members with new educational tools and resources to stand out from the competition.

PSI offers pet owners a free pet-sitter interview checklist, as well as tips for having a conversation with potential pet sitters about background verification, on the PSI Web site.
