Improved preservation leads Kentucky to choose Preservica for their digital repository, reports Tessella

We know that Preservica will allow us to safely secure our electronic records, including our historical archives. We are very pleased to embark on this safe and secure digital preservation solution.

Tessella, world leaders in digital preservation, are proud to announce that the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA), Public Records Division has selected Preservica, Tessella’s cloud-based digital preservation service, to preserve their government records and historical digital collections.

KDLA has worked for almost thirty years to build an electronic records and digital preservation program for Kentucky’s important government records. KDLA staff recently began investigating and establishing a trusted digital repository for the growing volume of digital content. KDLA participated in a test audit of the ISO 16363:2012 standard, also known as the Trusted Digital Repository (TDR), to assess the practices around its existing digital repository. KDLA was the only state government agency to participate in a test of this standard before it was officially adopted by ISO.

“We have been very active in electronic records program development and digital preservation and have tried a variety of solutions over the past thirty years,” said Barbara Teague, State Archivist and Records Administrator and Public Records Division Director at KDLA. “Our participation in the test audit gave us good understanding of the gaps in our digital preservation strategy and provided a clear functional analysis on what was needed to develop a long-term solution. We looked at several different ways forward and found that Preservica was the strongest and best solution for us.”

Barbara continued: “We know that Preservica will allow us to safely secure our electronic records, including our historical archives. We are very pleased to embark on this safe and secure digital preservation solution.”

Jon Tilbury, Director of Archiving Solutions for Tessella commented: “KDLA is one of the largest state archives collections in the US and has been a pioneer in electronic records since the early 80’s, so we are delighted that they choose Preservica as part of their vision to become a Trusted Digital Repository. We are looking forward to continuing collaborating with KDLA and demonstrating the difference that Preservica can make.”

Jon continued: “Preservica really lowers the barriers to entry for organizations looking for full life cycle digital archiving and is suitable for commercial organizations or public institutions, in fact anyone who wants a high quality digital archiving system. Preservica is available via an affordable yearly subscription for the full application.”

Preservica is based on the advanced SDB technology in use at leading National Archives and Libraries, making the same level of digital preservation service available to business, organisations, and memory institutions that need to protect their digital wealth without incurring all the human capital costs of running such a specialist service.

Preservica conforms to the OAIS digital archiving standard (ISO 14721:2003) and provides workflows and tools to operate a long-term digital preservation solution including:

  • Ingest –upload digital content and metadata from a variety of content sources into Preservica using fully quality-assured process
  • Content storage – store multiple copies of digital objects in a safe, backed-up location which is checked continually and, if necessary, repaired
  • Flexible metadata and security – choose the way content is arranged, described, and protected
  • Access – full search, browse, and download facilities via a browser interface
