The Governors Highway Safety Association has released its preliminary data regarding teen driver fatalities resulting from car accidents in the United States, and while the national numbers are up, those in Georgia are down. The Georgia car accident lawyers at Rechtman & Spevak, whose Web site URL can be found at http://www.rsinjurylawyers.com, would like to comment on the data included in this report and alert the public to its release.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, more than 300,000 car accidents occur in the state every year. These crashes lead to more than 120,000 injuries and to more than 1,500 fatalities. In addition to this data, the Governors Highway Safety Association gathers statistics relating to car accidents across the country. Recently, the GHSA released the data relating to the number of teen driving fatalities in the United States during the first half of 2012.

According to the report that was issued by the GHSA, the number of drivers who were either 16 or 17 years of age who lost their lives in car accidents rose by a factor of nearly 20 percent during the first half of 2012 as compared to the same time period in 2011. However, the report also stated that the number of deaths of drivers of these ages in Georgia during the first half of 2012 dropped to 5 as compared to 6 during the same time period in the previous year.

Overall, the report indicated that 107 16-year-old drivers had lost their lives in car accidents in the United States during the first half of 2012. The report also stated that 25 states reported increases in their teen driving fatalities, while 17 states including Georgia reported decreases and the remaining 8 states along with the District of Columbia reported no change in fatalities when comparing reporting periods.

The Georgia car accident lawyers at Rechtman & Spevak would like to alert all motorists in Georgia of this data, and they would especially like to alert parents of drivers who are of this age of the report and the potential dangers that teens who drive face. The report commented that one of the leading causes of teen driving fatalities was driver distraction, and the attorneys at Rechtman & Spevak would like to encourage motorists to use extreme caution and to maintain focus when they are on the roads in the state.
