Smith & Hassler, personal injury lawyers based in Houston, discuss the responsibility of drivers on Houston interstates and freeways after a jeep driver lost control of his vehicle in a late-night accident fatality.

In a moment, you or your loved one can be seriously injured, unable to work and unable to carry on a happy life

A recent multi-collision accident became a car crash fatality on the North Freeway, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle on Feb. 6. Houston auto accident lawyers Smith & Hassler say that any accident involving a fatality can be complicated and a thorough investigation is crucial.

According to the Chronicle, a driver died after losing control of his jeep on the North Freeway. Police said he veered out of his lane and struck a concrete barrier wall. His car then crossed four lanes of traffic, a grassy median, a fence, a parked car and, finally, struck a pole. The news report said that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene and that no other vehicle occupant injuries were involved.

Houston personal injury attorney Albert M. Hassler III said accidents in which the driver appears to have lost control of the car can have any number of causes. “While the cause of this tragic accident in Houston is still under investigation, in general an out-of-control vehicle might be the result of an intoxicated driver or someone who fell asleep behind the wheel,” Hassler said. “Experienced accident attorneys can fight for injury victims and families so they can get answers – and the responsible individual or entity can be held accountable.”

The Texas Department of Transportation’s report “Texas Motor Vehicle Traffic Crash Highlights Calendar Year 2011” shows that single vehicle “run-off the road” accident fatalities comprised 40% of all automobile crash deaths, with a total of 1,208 fatalities that year across the state of Texas. The report also shows that one person was killed nearly every three hours, and one person was injured every two and a half minutes. In addition, Texas DOT data on “Crashes and Injuries in Cities and Towns” shows that, in Houston alone, there were 178 fatalities in 2011, and over 38,000 crashes.

Hassler said the statistics show that accidents are not unusual in Texas. ”In a moment, you or your loved one can be seriously injured, unable to work and unable to carry on a happy life,” Hassler said. “We urge all drivers to avoid distractions and stay alert while behind the wheel. If you or a loved one is in an accident through no fault of your own, don’t hesitate to talk with an attorney about your options. Our firm believes in holding negligent people accountable for their actions.”
