Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 16, 2013
Atlanta personal injury lawyer Gary Martin Hays today weighed in on a government report that states the number of teen drivers who died in car accidents has decreased in Georgia in 2012, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Feb. 26. The Georgia accident attorney said more work is needed to reduce the number even lower.
According to the AJC, the number of young teen drivers who died in car accidents fell in Georgia, but increased for the nation during the first six months of 2012. The newspaper reported on a Governors Highway Association report that compared the number of deaths in 2011 to the same period in 2012. In Georgia, five teenage drivers (ages 16 or 17 years old) died during the first six months of 2012, which was down from six drivers during that same period in 2011.
“While this downward trend is good news for Georgia, I’d like to see that number drop to zero,” said Hays, an Atlanta car accident lawyer. “Too many drivers are still making reckless choices on the road, from texting and driving to drinking behind the wheel and driving while too tired.”
As a veteran personal injury attorney, Hays said he has seen first-hand the devastating impact caused by negligent drivers in Georgia. He said a negligent driver can cause a serious injury or fatality in the blink of an eye.
According to the AJC, the safety report is the first state-by-state look at teen driver fatalities in 2012. The newspaper states that overall traffic deaths nationally increased by 8 percent. The number of young teen driver deaths jumped by 19 percent between 2011 and 2012, from 202 to 240.
Georgia is one of 17 states that reported decreases, according to the AJC. Twenty-five states reported that more teenagers died in car accidents between 2011 and 2012. Only the District of Columbia reported no change, according to the newspaper.
Allan Williams, the researcher who completed the report, stated in the AJC that he believes the fatality increase is linked to the leveling off of state driving programs and that more teens are driving due to an improved economy.
Atlanta attorney Hays said he encourages Georgia and other states to implement more state driving safety programs, particularly those that would reach out to teenage drivers.
“Safety initiatives can make a big difference,” Hays said. “By raising awareness about distracted driving and other types of negligence, the state can do more to save lives.”
