As patient data grows exponentially, unstructured information is an increasing challenge for healthcare organizations of all sizes. Acute care settings use a variety of devices to catalog patient data, from scanners to digital cameras to mobile devices to medical equipment. The number of devices used and patient information produced offers a unique set of challenges, problems that are solved by the lightweight, standards-based Inofile Messenger™ solution embedded in several scanning solutions from Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., the market leader in document imaging scanners, which will be demonstrated at the 2013 Annual HIMSS Conference & Exhibition at Fujitsu booth #6340, March 3-7 in New Orleans.

Inofile Messenger is a web application that uses HL7 messaging to tag and structure unstructured clinical content. This structured content can be sent to virtually any EMR or document management system. Integrated to the specific workflows of a department, with the press of a button, emergency departments, inpatient, outpatient and nursing stations can now capture documents and faxes at the source, using secure web services and generating structured content in formats widely accepted by the healthcare industry. Messenger also supports basic XML structuring to integrate into non-clinical applications such as a document management system or advanced capture solution.

Designed with the HIMSS EMR Adoption Model in mind, Fujitsu scanners with Inofile Messenger are powered to provide structuring and exchange of clinical documentation that supports whatever stage a hospital or health system is at in implementing an EMR. Inofile Messenger structures documentation into commonly used clinical formats such as HL7, CDA, or XDS that are easily uploaded into any backend clinical system. Additionally, Messenger creates document and batch packages for submission into a document management system or advanced processing solution for further document QC and review by HIM.
