NJOP Turns an Ordinary Friday Night into Something Extraordinary for Thousands of People Across the Continent

On Friday night, March 1, 2013 hundreds of synagogues across North America took part in an historic national Jewish event to celebrate what unifies all Jews — Shabbat. Sponsored by NJOP, (, the acclaimed Shabbat Across America/Canada Program brings tens of thousands of Jews together each year for a Friday night experience occurring at hundreds of locations simultaneously.

"Shabbat Across America/Canada allows Jews-many of whom might never have been to a Shabbat service or dinner-- to come together and get a real feel for the cornerstone of Jewish tradition," said Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Founder and Director of NJOP. "We lead such hectic lives that everyone can benefit from taking the time to unplug, unwind and reflect on the week. Shabbat is that opportunity we’ve all been waiting for to spend time with friends and family."

Shabbat Across America/Canada introduces Jews with limited Jewish knowledge and background to the joy and beauty of the Jewish Sabbath and creates a welcoming Shabbat atmosphere for Jews already familiar with the traditions. More than nine hundred thousand people have participated in the highly successful program since its inception in 1997, and more than 400 synagogues participated this year. While specific program details varied from location to location, participants enjoyed an explanatory Friday evening Sabbath service, as well as a festive communal dinner in a warm environment. Many synagogues utilized NJOP's educational modules while others chose to bring in guest speakers or other special programs.
