Unique programs improve manufacturing employment and performance by delivering the skills required to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a modern manufacturing facility.

Southeastern Community College (SCC), serving four counties in eastern Iowa, has partnered with industrial skill solutions provider Scientific Management Techniques (SMT) and Roquette America to establish training programs for prospective employees, creating potential new career opportunities focused in the industrial manufacturing area.

Karen E. Klein, at Bloomberg news service, reported on a recent survey of 1,600 manufacturing companies in the U.S. It showed that nearly half the respondents have openings for line workers, skilled trade workers, and engineers, but many have trouble filling the positions.

“Local manufacturers look to SCC for innovative skill solutions that will help drive performance in their facility,” says Mr. Dennis Hinkle, Executive Director of the Center for Business at SCC. “SMT’s industrial skills training curriculum and hands-on industrial skills assessment programs have been driving industrial performance globally for four decades. We are excited to partner with SMT and Roquette to deliver these proven industrial skill solutions for all manufacturers in our communities.”

SMT’s hands-on industrial skills curriculum teaches and trains the critical skill sets required to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a modern manufacturing facility. With highly effective industrial skills curriculum that is 100% demand driven, built by and for industrial operations professionals, SMT has trained SCC staff to deliver a program incorporating over 200 hands-on training aids. Students train on the same tools, components, and systems they will encounter on the manufacturing floor.

SCC has also deployed SMT's industrial skills assessment program. SMT’s industrial skill “Assessment Machines” and protocols are used in the hiring process globally for the selection and evaluation of maintenance mechanics, machine operators, industrial electricians, PLC technicians, electro-mechanical personnel, automation & controls technicians, and CNC operation personnel. The program dramatically improves productivity by increasing the skill level of the manufacturing workforce. SMT has forty years of data and over 30 validation studies confirming the efficacy of this process. The data-driven, scientific-based program simplifies the hiring process. The solution lowers the risk and cost of hiring and aligns the hiring process with industrial lean/TPM initiatives.

“Roquette America has been working to enhance our industrial maintenance training programs for prospective employees within our local communities,” states Mr. Tom Ross, Director of Human Resources at Roquette. “We have determined that the skills curriculum and assessment capabilities designed by Scientific Management Techniques, with their proven track record of success, are the most efficient industrial skill training platforms available and we look forward to a long-term strategic relationship with SCC and Scientific Management Techniques.”

“This is a great example of how solution driven schools like Southeastern Community College can collaborate with industry to solve the acute and growing industrial skills shortage,” states Stephen Berry, SMT President. “With these capabilities Southeastern will be improving both employment and performance for all manufacturers in their market for many years.”
