Cameras were present to commemorate Nelson’s historic victory against Real Madrid in 1923. The footage will be used as part of the pre-match build-up for the Manchester united V Real Madrid match on Tuesday. The Champions League knock-out game between the two giants of European football will attract the attention of the entire world.
Nelson FC became the first English team to beat Real Madrid during an overseas tour to Spain. Having secured a draw and a much-needed away goal in the Bernabeu; Manchester United may not even require a win to progress. A goalless draw would see the English side progress to the quarter finals of the competition.
In May 1923, Nelson FC travelled to Spain for four games as part of an end-of-season tour. Two of the games ended in victories for the Lancashire side beating the current Spanish champions Real Madrid 4-2 and Real Oviedo 2-1.
The tour was taken as preparation for life in Division 2 having been promoted as champions from Division 3 the season before. The team was still buoyant from winning the title the month before after five wins in a row.
Real Madrid has long held a connection with teams from the North West. After the Munich air disaster, the Spanish side offered Manchester United star player Alfredo Di Stefano. Although few of the current Madrid line-up will have heard of Nelson FC; the two clubs are irreparably linked.
Nelson FC ensured that they put on a show for the camera with a five-star victory over Irlam. Ash Higgins hit a hat-trick as the Admirals saw off the competition 5-1. Nelson FC will be hoping that the build-up to the Champions League game will show some of the free-flowing football that they displayed against Irlam.
The cameras caught up with fans of Nelson FC before and after the game, hearing tales, jokes and anecdotes about their beloved club. The glitz and glamour of the Champions League will be granted a bit of Lancashire character.
Main sponsor Walker Prestons were also present to lend their support to the club. The accident injury solicitors enjoyed the rout of Irlam. The firm specialises in helping the victims of accidents claim the personal injury compensation that they are entitled to.
A number of the Nelson FC boys are Manchester United fans and will be hoping that Rooney and company can put on a similarly impressive performance on Tuesday night. Walker Prestons’ Partner, Abid Sarwar, a life-long United fan said: “Manchester United have the advantage of being the home side. Whilst it is great to have Ronaldo back at Old Trafford, it will not be in the colours we all remember and love him for. Hopefully he will be kept out of the game and United can overcome the Spanish giants as Nelson FC did 90 years ago.”
About the Company: Walker Prestons helps people who are the victims of accidents receive the compensation that they are entitled to.
