A recent article published in The New York Times discusses the results of a new study which showed the advantages of a Mediterranean diet for heart health. Bellucci Premium Toscano, producers of Italian olive oil, issue a response, saying that the proven heart-healthy benefits of olive oil consumption represent one of the diet's strong points.

On March 7, Bellucci Premium Toscano responds to a study featured in The New York Times which determined that consuming olive oil, nuts, fruits, and the other components of the “Mediterranean diet” reduced the risk of heart disease by almost a third.

According to The New York Times article, the study, published on The New England Journal of Medicine’s website, successfully showed that “about 30 percent of heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease can be prevented in people at high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables, and even drink wine with meals….”

The study lasted nearly 5 years and had a positive impact on all the participants. Researchers divided participants into two groups, one of which consumed “at least 4 tablespoons” of extra-virgin olive oil a day. “Heart disease experts said the study was a triumph because it showed that a diet was powerful in reducing heart disease risk, and it did so using the most rigorous methods,” reports the article.

Natalie Sexenian, marketing manager for Bellucci Premium Toscano, the network of Italian extra virgin olive oil producers, is thrilled about the results and says, “We are ecstatic over this study’s findings because it further underlines the positive effect olive oil has on a person’s health. The research community has consistently reinforced the benefits of consuming high quality olive oil. This is truly a win for the industry and we are looking forward to what’s next for us.” Sexenian adds that Bellucci Premium recommends a daily intake of at least two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in order to maximize its potential health benefits.
