On March 11, PRO Compression, manufacturer of compression socks for runners and golfers, responds to an article from Active.com on the benefits of using compression clothes.
If you’ve watched a sporting event in the last year or so, chances are you’ve seen someone wearing some sort of compression garment. But what exactly do compression clothes do for athletes? The recent Active.com article delved into this question.
“Elastic compression stockings have been used medically in preventing and treating aching, tired, heavy legs, leg and ankle swelling (edema), varicose veins and spider veins,” the article stated. While the health benefits for people suffering from these conditions are pretty clear, the idea that compression garments can help improve athletic ability is still doubted by many.
“Manufacturers claim that wearing compression stockings can optimize blood flow, reduce leg fatigue, reduce muscle soreness, prevent injury, help remove metabolic byproducts, dampen muscle vibration, and thereby increase endurance and improve running performance.”
Some recent studies have addressed this question, says the article. While a significant amount of the research on compression clothing has examined the potential medical benefits on individuals with circulatory problems, some studies focused on athletic and healthy people. The article describes the results of one study which found that wearing compression clothes “did result in lower post-exercise blood lactate levels compared to subjects wearing no [compression] stockings.” This finding is consistent with many athletes' claim that compression clothing helps reduce recovery time.
The article states that while more research will continue to be done on this subject, there is no doubting that the use of compression clothing is a fast-growing trend among athletes. Some claim that it gives them a mental edge, while others swear that the clothes help increase blood flow and energy during a workout as well as decreasing recovery time.
Eric Smith, CEO of PRO Compression, responds to the article. “As further research is conducted on the benefits of compression socks for athletic performance, I think we will see more proof that they really do help improve endurance,” he said. “It’s also important to remember that compression clothes are not just for competitive athletes – they can take anyone’s workout to a higher level.”
