Tax time is one of the busiest times of the year in terms of sharing personally identifying information. Consumers are often too preoccupied with the tasks of preparing to file their tax returns and may not consider the risks they may be placing on their financial futures. In support of National Consumer Protection Week, Intersections Inc. (NASDAQ: INTX), leading provider of consumer and corporate risk management services, has put together guidelines for consumers to help protect themselves from becoming victims of identity theft while filing their tax returns.

The latest 2013 Identity Fraud Report conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research and co-sponsored by Intersections, showed there were more than 12 million victims of identity fraud in 2012. That same year, the IRS identified more than 640,000 incidents of identity theft impacting the tax administration. The Javelin study also indicated tablet owners are more than 80% more likely than all other consumers to become fraud victims. And with more and more tax filers preparing and filing their returns online, there is a greater opportunity to become a victim.

“Intersections is a strong advocate for consumer education when it comes to identity theft protection, which is why we support consumer awareness initiatives like National Consumer Protection Week,” said Steve Schwartz, President of Partner Services for Intersections Inc. “Tax time is a busy time of year when it comes to sharing personal information and consumers may not be aware of the risks to their identities; especially as more people take to mobile devices to file their returns. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these tips and use extra caution and care when filing their taxes this season.”

Top tips for a Safe & Secure Tax Season:

  •     Be suspicious of any calls or emails purporting to be from the IRS – the IRS will always write to you first, will rarely call, and will never email you.
  •     Never confirm your Social Security number or bank account details by email or over the phone, unless you are initiating the call. Always ask if you can provide a different form of identification.
  •     If using an online tax preparation software, never access your account through public wi-fi. Instead, use your secured home network or your carrier’s cellular service.
  •     Make sure your computer is free of malware like computer viruses and spyware that can steal a copy of your SSN or bank account password.
  •     Be sure to monitor your credit report after tax time to ensure no fraudulent activity has occurred. Consider enrolling in a service like IDENTITY GUARD® Platinum that proactively monitors your personal and financial information to help you stay aware and alert.
