Equity Becomes More Important As Optimism Increases

March 6, 2013 – Top executives in investment management are more satisfied today than they have been since the beginning of the financial crisis, and it will take greater effort to retain and attract top talent as a result, according to the Kathy Freeman Company, a national retained executive search firm.

The firm’s Fourth Annual Executive Survey found that senior sales and marketing executives have gone from being mostly dissatisfied to mostly satisfied in their current position. More than 60% of the executives aren’t looking for a new position. The survey also found that less than one half of the respondents were inclined to look for another job – the lowest percentage since the firm began its research.

In 2009, almost three-quarters of the senior executives surveyed were dissatisfied with their job and were looking for a new opportunity.

“The gloom of the financial crisis is over,” said CEO Kathy Freeman. “Optimism is running high, and C-level and other senior executives are feeling much better about their firms and the job market. For those seeking to attract and retain talent, the game has also changed. Companies will need to compete more aggressively and move quickly to hire the talent they need to grow.”

The survey of executives conducted in December 2012 also showed that equity ownership is increasingly important. Executives say they are willing to stay put or even defer compensation if it means an opportunity to share in the upside of the firm’s success through equity.

“The growing interest in equity is another reflection of the optimism among executives,” Freeman said. “To succeed in the marketplace, firms will need to link compensation more closely to performance and create opportunities for executives to play a meaningful role in developing new ideas and solutions.”
