A new study from Tel Aviv University has found the most effective therapy is also the least expensive in alleviating lower back pain: aerobic walking. The study, led by Dr. Michal Katz-Leurer of Tel Aviv University’s Stanley Steyer School of Health Professions at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, was published this week in the journal Clinical Rehabilitation. The study authors found that walking engages abdominal and back muscles synchronically, similar to physical therapy solutions designed to target specific muscles individually. The study involved 52 participants with half completing a muscle strengthening program meeting 3x weekly for a six week period and the other half undertaking an aerobic walking program. The outcome of the study found that both groups benefited equally however the walking group results came at a much lower cost despite being “as effective as treatment that could have been received in the clinic,” stated Dr. Katz-Leurer. The study also emphasized that the walking regimen encouraged a healthier lifestyle since the treatment remained in the hands of the individual not a therapist.
