Doctors Health Press, a division of Lombardi Publishing Corporation and publisher of various natural health newsletters, books, and reports, including the popular online Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin, is reporting on a new study finding that omega-6 fatty acids can play a big role in extending life expectancy.
As Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin (http://www.doctorshealthpress.com/food-and-nutrition-articles/a-fat-that-makes-you-live-longer) notes, researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Colorado report that the link between omega-6 and living longer has to do with a process called “autophagy.” Autophagy is a process that happens in cells.
Basically, when a cell becomes unnecessary or dysfunctional, autophagy kicks in and one of two things happen: 1) a redundant cell is broken down and its components are recycled to use elsewhere; or 2) as is the case with dysfunctional cells, autophagy breaks the cell down completely so that it isn’t able to cause any problems inside the body.
As the article “A Fat That Makes You Live Longer?” reports, researchers found that not only do omega-6 fatty acids play a very important role in energy storage, but it’s now clear that they also help trigger autophagy, helping to lengthen a person’s life span.
Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin concludes by noting that while readers should get some healthy omega-6 fatty acids into their diets, they should be sure to balance their intake of omega-6s with omega-3 fatty acids.
