Rapid Recovery Solution comments on an article posted on Starherald.com which details a Nebraskan library's initiative to reclaim overdue books by using collection services.

On March 9, Rapid Recovery Solution comments on an article posted on StarHerald.com, which details an initiative by the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library in Nebraska to reclaim overdue books by using collection services.

According to the Starherald.com article, the Lied Scottsbluff Public Library is instituting a new system to better ensure the return of library property. The library is taking advantage of collection services as a way to provide better motivation for patrons to return library books and other library materials.

Library director Abby Yellman is quoted as saying that she had reviewed the amount of materials that have failed to be returned. She claims that approximately nine hundred books were not returned and the loss added up to $13,500 – almost half of their $30,000 budget. Yellman expresses disappointment in the lost opportunity to use the full amount of the budget for improvements instead of replacements. The library director also made a comment dismissing a desire for punishment or fines, saying, “We just want our materials back so that we can have others check them out.”

The article asserts that the collection of overdue materials will not be immediate. A grace period for the return has been implemented in order to accommodate the individuals who intend to return materials, but simply lose track of the due date.

John Monderine, CEO of collections agency Rapid Recovery Solution, comments on Lied Scottsbluff Public Library’s new debt collection system. “It may sound strange for a library to take measures like hiring the services of a collections agency in order to get books back, but the numbers quoted completely justify the action. Lied Scottsbluff Public Library is claiming that they are losing nearly half their budget due to patrons' negligence. It's reasonable to assume that the services they are employing will not only help to maintain the library’s materials, but cost much less in the long run.”
