It’s one thing to buy a fake Gucci purse. The allure of high end luxury brands is often too much to resist when the price tag is so low and the consequences are “out of sight out mind.” But when it comes to your health, is the low cost of counterfeit worth the high risk? That’s what people need to ask themselves before they fall prey to seductive offers of cosmetic treatments at bargain basement prices. A growing sector of the counterfeit goods industry is the production and trade in medical products and devices. Increasingly sophisticated design and production methods are allowing counterfeiters to move from purses and perfumes to more advanced technology - including body contouring devices used in plastic and cosmetic surgery practices. Dr. Trevor Born, of the TMB Cosmetic Surgery practices in Toronto and New York, reports seeing an increase in illicit copies of medical devices and products, and believes the public should be more aware of the risks when they shop for bargains rather than quality and safety.

“It’s a trend in the industry: people looking for deals on their cosmetic treatments are lured in by providers who are passing their counterfeit goods and services off as legitimate.” Born says.

The latest company to fall victim to illegal imitation is Zeltiq Aesthetics – developers of the popular CoolSculpting® fat reduction treatment. CoolSculpting® is a non surgical, non invasive procedure that uses patented technology to induce Cryolipolysis™ – the death of fat cells through the introduction of controlled cooling. The treatment safely targets and eliminates unwanted fat cells in the treatment area without damage to neighboring tissues. Also referred to as the “fat freezing” treatment, CoolSculpting is both FDA and Health Canada approved for fat reduction in the abdomen and flanks.

“A patient brought it to our attention that a neighboring spa was offering “fat freezing” treatments at a suspiciously reduced cost, so we looked into it,” Dr. Born explains. “We alerted Zeltiq to the matter, and they confirmed that the device being used was a Chinese made counterfeit.”

Consumers need to make more informed choices about their purchases in order to stem the illegal sale and trade of potentially dangerous counterfeit goods. In the case of CoolSculpting, serious harm can be caused to a person if the counterfeit machine is faulty, or if proper treatment protocol is not followed.

Sergio Garcia, Senior VP and & General Counsel of Zeltiq Aesthetics tells us: “The CoolSculpting procedure is the result of years of technological development and significant clinical trials, designed to ensure that the treatment is safe and effective. We are very concerned about copycat devices from China and elsewhere because these devices, if they work at all, lack safety features and are known to have caused burns, blisters, and scarring.”

In the end, the old adage “you get what you pay for” still rings true. “Ultimately, consumers need to understand that the cost of a procedure most likely reflects the skill of the provider, as well as the safety and efficacy of the treatment itself,” Dr. Born tells us. “CoolSculpting is a proven technology that gets real results, and the staff in my practice has undergone extensive training to ensure the safety of patients before, during and after their procedure. If a provider is offering all of those things at a bargain basement price, it’s probably too good to be true.”

Those who are interested in a procedure should do their research beforehand. Make sure your provider has a good reputation. Ask your doctor or friends for a referral, or visit a website such as for reviews. Sergio Garcia from Zeltiq also encourages people who are interested in CoolSculpting to consult the company website for a list of certified providers, “Patients have been tricked by bait-and-switch schemes and we encourage anyone considering treatment to make sure their provider is authentic by checking on”
