Regularly maintaining bird feeders will not only keep the birds safe, but the feeders will also serve as an attractive, year-round focal point for the backyard.

Normally, cleaning bird feeders is a chore – the debris that builds up in the bottom of the feeder is difficult to reach and creates an unsightly mess.

To combat dirt and grime, Droll Yankees’ Onyx Clever Clean line of bird feeders was designed with a simple “twist and release” base that ensures quick and easy cleaning, every time. By removing the base, feeder tubes can be accessed from the bottom up – or the top down – allowing for a simple scrubbing with a Bird Feeder Brush (BFB).

This will come as welcome news for people who love to feed and watch birds in their backyards. Most backyard birders adopt the mission of helping birds to thrive – not only by feeding them, but also by providing a safe habitat, and keeping bird feeders and accessories clean to prevent the spread of deadly diseases such as:

Salmonellosis – The most common disease spread by overcrowding, which leads to contaminated surfaces that infect other birds.

Aspergillosis – Aspergillus fungus grows on damp seed, resulting in bronchitis and pneumonia.

Avian Pox – Several strains of pox virus can be spread when birds come into direct contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces, or when they eat or drink contaminated food or water.

To prevent dirty feeders and the spread of disease, Droll Yankees recommends soaking feeders and accessories regularly, in a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and warm water, then scrubbing away any remaining debris and air-drying before filling and rehanging the feeders. It is always a good idea to wash hands thoroughly after handling any dirty bird feeders or accessories.

As an added bonus to keeping feeders clean, Betsy Puckett, Droll Yankees’ President, noted: “Regularly maintaining bird feeders will not only keep the birds safe, but the feeders will also serve as an attractive, year-round focal point for the backyard.”

To attract an even wider variety of favorite backyard bird species – including ground-feeding birds like cardinals - Clever Clean Seed Trays (CCT, CCT-S) attach to the base of any Onyx feeder, save dropped seed, and conveniently stay attached when the base is removed for cleaning.

Onyx Clever Clean feeders are available in 12", 18", and 24" sizes, in both sunflower and Nyjer seed versions. Look for them at a local retailer, call Droll Yankees at 888-851-6621, or shop online at http://www.drollyankees.com.
