An article published by Reuters, suggests elderly people are more prone to hip injury when taking sleep aids. Online Bed Quilt, a leader in mattress stores, confirms the negative impacts of sleep aids and gives advice on mattresses.

On March 13, Online Bed Quilt, one of the country’s leading mattress stores, responds to an article published by Reuters, which explains new research suggesting sleep aids cause more hip injuries in nursing home residents.

According to Reuters, a new Harvard Medical School study found that nursing home residents are more likely to injure their hip when taking sleep aids. Older pills containing benzodiazepine sedatives, like Valium and Xanax, are known to be dangerous for older patients, reports Reuters.

Because these types of drugs are associated with increased risk of broken bones and falls, doctors have resorted to using new medicines called non-benzodiazepines. Some of these drugs include Ambien, Lunesta and Sonata reports Reuters.

However, according to Reuters, new studies show that non-benzodiazepines are hazardous as well. The article says non-benzodiazepines can impair memory, balance and driving ability.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that 11 percent of 15,000 nursing home patients suffered a hip fracture while taking a non-benzodiazepine in 2007 reports Reuters. They also discovered that there was a 66 percent increase in the risk of fracture when taking a non-benzodiazepine drug.

Justin Maas, a representative from one of the country’s leading mattress stores, Online Bed Quilt, says there are many studies that highlight the negative impacts of using sleeping pills. Instead of using a sleep aid, Maas suggests updating mattresses in nursing homes.

“There are many new beds available that are well-suited for an elderly person,” he says. “Sometimes older people have trouble sleeping because they are uncomfortable with their mattress. However, they might not realize it. It’s important to consider updating mattresses for patients with sleep disorders. It might improve their health, as well as remedy the insomnia.”

Maas says beds from Sleep Number or Tempurpedic could be beneficial for older patients. “The Sleep Number bed is adjustable, and while it’s a bit expensive, it could significantly improve sleep in people with insomnia,” he says. “This could help decrease the risk of injuries deriving from sleep aids.”
