Colle Farmers Market issues a comment on University of Cincinnati students' campaign to get organic food brought in to their campus, saying that it's important for young people to help secure a sustainable future for themselves.

On March 12, 2013, Colle Farmers Market issues a response to an article published on News Record announcing that University of Cincinnati students are advocating to bring organic food to their campus.

According to the News Record article, University of Cincinnati students received permission to use a Real Food Calculator as part of the national Real Food Challenge which is an attempt to try to increase organic food, or “real food”, by 20 percent in student dining halls by 2020.

According to Page Kagafas, co-president of LEAP, which is the student organization behind the school's organic food movement, “The commitment is still the ultimate goal because that is what [ensures] that the calculator will continue to be done each year, because any school can do the calculator just once and never do it again. Signing the commitment [would say] our school cares to work toward 20 percent real food.”

The article reports that the executive committee is moving forward with the Real Food Calculator in order to find the University’s real food percentage. They will become the largest school in the Midwest to complete the calculator in an attempt to bring in organic food.

According to Lane Hart, University of Cincinnati's student body president, “As part of our commitment to sustainability as well as continuing to make sure that we have healthy and local food options available, it is definitely a good idea for us to be involved in [the Real Food Challenge]. Maybe we can’t implement the entire thing in year one, but we can work toward that.”

Colle Farmers Market issues a response, applauding the students and their decision to try to bring organic food to their campus. “It’s great to see college kids making an effort to eat healthier,” says a Colle representative. “They are our future, after all. Organic food is sustainable, nutrient-dense and a key component in a natural, healthy life style.”
