InfoRelay Bears Mid-Atlantic Winter Storm Saturn Without Harm to its Network Infrastructure

Increased technical preparation and backup infrastructure measures taken to ensure network and data center continuity during natural disasters affecting the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.

National data center provider InfoRelay rides out Winter Storm Saturn without harm to its network infrastructure or power systems. Northern Virginia-based InfoRelay has data center facilities throughout the midwest and along the Mid-Atlantic regions that were struck by the Winter Storm Saturn. Chicago, IL, where InfoRelay’s ORD1 data center facility is located, experienced its heaviest March snowfall since 1954.

InfoRelay, headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, provides clients with Disaster Recovery (DR) planning, Cloud hosting, server colocation, point-to-point Metro Ethernet Connectivity, enterprise-grade data backup, customized support contracts and SAS70 Type 2 and SSAE16 Type 2 certified Data centers in 14 markets across the US, such as Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Miami, Dallas and San Jose.

InfoRelay leveraged the large investment that it had already made in high network and power supply redundancy, to ensure that clients located throughout the US and the world were provided with reliable, secure network connectivity. Power redundancy measures at the Dulles Exchange, InfoRelay’s headquarters and flagship data center in Herndon, Virginia include 2N and N+1 Power configurations through dual power grids with diverse power availability, and an emergency diesel generator infrastructure with flywheel uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems. Other provisions made to ensure network redundancy include diverse, redundant fiber entrances, an optimized bandwidth blend of more than 15 ISPs and network providers, and a proprietary dark fiber ring connecting its four Northern Virginia data centers.

In preparation for the Saturn "Snowquester" storm and as part of its standard weather event preparation procedure, InfoRelay also conducted a series of infrastructure audits to ensure that all systems were operating properly and would continue to do so in the case of an outage. InfoRelay technicians staffed the Dulles Exchange Data Center throughout the storm on a 24 hour/day basis, and were provided with emergency food as well as housing in the Washington Dulles Airport Hilton hotel that is physically connected to the data center. InfoRelay’s Data Center Manager and Provisioning Engineer Michael Sather explains, “Initially, the diesel generator infrastructure was tested and fuel levels were verified. Next, backup fuel vendors were placed on standby in the case of a long-term dependency on generator power. We then carefully inspected all mechanical equipment including Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), UPS, and HVAC cooling equipment. Once these passed quality control standards, InfoRelay provisioned its Disaster Recovery team of highly trained technical staff to ensure consistent monitoring of network operations. While this is part of a standard ongoing procedure, additional checks are performed before anticipated weather events.” Other InfoRelay locations in regions that expected inclement weather were also prepared for power outages with similar measures to those used at the Dulles Exchange Data Center.
